Medscape names Top 10 Best Places to Practice in 2017

Medscape has released a list of the 10 best cities in the United States for doctors to practice medicine -- and a list of the five worst cities, just for good measure. The rankings were determined based on various state-based measures that assess factors known to cause burnout among doctors, including rates of malpractice filings and medical board actions, income levels, patient volume and physician density.

Measures were also taken into account that apply to all people in each state, including: psychological well-being, violent crime, divorce rates and help for families with children. Metrics covering rates of happiness, crime and traffic were also taken into account for a well-rounded assessment of the potential for professional satisfaction.

There were a number of other findings as well. Emergency medicine earned the inauspicious title of top burnout specialty, with family medicine and plastic surgery not far behind. Honolulu, Hawaii and Des Moines, Iowa were found to have the healthiest populations, while New Orleans, Louisiana has the least healthy population. Omaha, Nebraska was deemed the best city for families, while Columbia, Maryland was named the best city for pet-lovers. Tulsa, Oklahoma, meanwhile, was named the most dangerous city in which to practice medicine.
